If you only listen to one song on True, this has to be it. I would go as far as saying that this is the finest vocal showing of her Career, the raw passion and emotion in her vocal delivery cannot be denied.

Undoubtedly, my favourite track on True is a cover of Blood Orange’s Bad girls which she so elegantly handles with such tact and precision that it comes close to being better than the original. “Don’t let me down” follows suit in the same vein and is just as aurally pleasing as its predecessor. Everything just works on this song, the music is A grade, it’s not overly produced, the sweet and airy vocals coupled with the sublime lyrical interpolation is classic Solange and makes for a song that’s begging to be the follow up single to “Losing you” Redemption comes in the form of “Lovers in the parking lot”. In what may appear as a contradiction of my earlier statements as to how artistically different the two sisters are, “Locked in closets” is a song that would have been right at home on Beyonce’s 4,not that it’s a bad song, in fact quite the contrary,it just fails to gel in organically with the rest of the album. This is followed by the curiously titled “some things never seem to fucking work” which despite its abrasive titling is a rather pensive yet somewhat saccharine lamentation of a failed relationship, it’s catchy enough to warrant a few listens, though it’s ruined somewhat by the overly extended monologue at the end by the producer. The lead single is the infectious “Losing you”, laced with ethnic elements, a dance friendly beat and sublime vocals, it’s an excellent choice for first single and reminds us why it is we fell In like with Solange in the first instance. The seven set collection of songs was co written and produced by Solange with long time collaborator Dev Hynes and serves as a prelude to her impending third studio album tentatively set for release In the first quarter of 2013. Younger Knowles has managed to carve out a distinct musical identity which began with the release of her critically acclaimed sophomore album Sol-angel and the Hadley St Dreams, a heavily 70’s influenced soul, funk alternative set which displayed her lyricism and artistic integrity.įour years later and having parted ways with Interscope records, Solange releases her first Extended Play, the aptly titled True on independent label Terrible Records. Solange Knowles knows all too well the constant and unrelenting comparisons to her more successful pop megastar sister, smartly enough the Much like the former members of destiny’s child,Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.
